Little Hands, Big Heart

Embracing the Journey: Brynlee and Amniotic Band Syndrome

As parents, there are moments in our lives that shape our perspective in ways we never expect. For us, one of those moments came when we learned that our daughter, Brynlee, now 22 months old, was born with Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS), a condition that affected her right hand. She’s missing three fingers, but that’s not stopping her. In fact, she is thriving, full of energy, and constantly surprising us with her resilience and determination.

What is Amniotic Band Syndrome?

Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) is a rare condition that occurs during pregnancy when fibrous bands in the amniotic sac constrict parts of the developing fetus. These bands can wrap around limbs, fingers, or toes, leading to deformities or even amputations. ABS can affect various parts of the body, but for Brynlee, it resulted in her missing three fingers on her right hand. The severity of ABS can vary from person to person, and in our case, Brynlee’s condition didn’t stop her from developing into the happy, active toddler she is today.

For many, a diagnosis like this might feel overwhelming. The unknowns, the fears, and the concerns about how it might impact their child’s future can all weigh heavily. But for us, seeing Brynlee embrace life with her unique hand has been a lesson in love, perseverance, and acceptance.

She’s Not Slowing Down

One of the most amazing things about Brynlee is her fearlessness. From the moment she began reaching and grabbing for toys, to her first steps, she has never let her hand hold her back. She grabs, climbs, plays, and interacts with her world just like any other child her age. It’s inspiring to see her face every challenge head-on, whether she’s stacking blocks, coloring, or playing with her favorite stuffed animals.

We never know what the future holds, but one thing is certain: Brynlee’s spirit is unstoppable. Her determination shows us that she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to.

Finding Support Through “Lucky Fin Project”

It wasn’t long after we learned about Brynlee’s condition that we began searching for other families who might be experiencing something similar. That’s when we found Lucky Fin Project, a Facebook community dedicated to people with Amniotic Band Syndrome and other limb differences. The group is filled with inspiring stories from parents, caregivers, and individuals who have embraced their differences and used them to their advantage.

The support we’ve found through Lucky Fin Project has been invaluable. Not only have we been able to connect with families who share similar experiences, but we’ve also learned from those who have walked this path before us. The group has been a source of strength, encouragement, and understanding. We’ve heard countless stories of children with ABS growing up to do incredible things, whether it’s playing sports, excelling in the arts, or pursuing careers that others might have doubted were possible for them.

Through the Lucky Fin Project, we’ve seen how this condition doesn’t define a person—it shapes their unique journey, but it doesn’t limit their potential. This community has become a beacon of hope, helping us feel less alone in this experience and more confident in supporting Brynlee on her journey.

Moving Forward With Love and Acceptance

As we watch Brynlee grow and reach new milestones, we know there will be challenges ahead. There will be questions, there will be obstacles, but there will also be joy, laughter, and love. Amniotic Band Syndrome might have given her a hand that looks different, but it hasn’t defined who she is.

She is strong. She is capable. She is loved.

For all the parents out there navigating similar journeys, remember that you are not alone. The Lucky Fin community and so many others are here to support you. We all have different stories, but one thing remains the same: we’re all incredibly proud of the brave, beautiful kids we get to watch grow and thrive.

Brynlee’s story is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see the amazing things she’ll do. The world is her oyster, and nothing, not even Amniotic Band Syndrome, will stop her from reaching her full potential.

I’m Kylee

Welcome to my blog! My name is Kylee, and I’m a 21-year-old mom navigating the wild world of motherhood with two under two. I’m the proud mama of Brynlee, my 22-month-old little girl, and Beckett, my 4-month-old baby boy. It’s a beautiful chaos trying to balance life with two tiny humans, but every day is an adventure!

I’ve been with my husband, Boden, since 2020—we were high school sweethearts—and together, we’re figuring out this whole parenting thing. When I’m not chasing around my kiddos, you’ll find me baking up something sweet, exploring new places with my family, or crafting with Brynlee (she’s already quite the little artist!).

This space is where I’ll share the highs, lows, and everything in between about life with my little ones. I’m so glad you’re here to join me on this crazy, love-filled journey!
